Vol.1(~5:37)

So it is time now, so I would like to start.

I’m Roy Nishizawa, the “English Doctor” and representative director of Roy Nishizawa Office.
Thank you for your time today.

So this time, due to the pandemic we’re using YouTube live to do this press conference.
I really appreciate everybody for watching.

And… so this press conference is related to the press release announced on October 1st.
And in this release the headline goes like this.

I’m gonna pull it up.

Great success in rescuing 3,000 copies of an English learning book through emergency crowdfunding in line with goal 12 of SDGs.

And it goes on to say, we conducted an emergency crowdfunding process to avoid the inventory disposal of two books in “the Strongest Fundamentals for TOEIC Series” published by Jitsumu Kyoiku Shuppan.
We succeeded in rescuing all 3,000 copies scheduled to be discarded and scrapped at the end of September.
This author-led effort to save books from disposal is an extremely rare case in the publishing industry.

So this was announced in October 1st… on October 1st and today I’d like to take time to explain what happened here in the form of a press conference.

Now before I go into anything you… some of you might be wondering who are you. So I’d like to introduce my profile.
I’m called an “English Doctor”. “English Doctor” is a trademark.

And yes, I’m using the analogy of a doctor because I am the kind, caring doctor who gives advice to English learners. And um… I don’t, I’m not actually a doctor. I don’t have a doctor’s degree, so I’m not real in that sense.

I am still wearing a white coat, I mean it’s not a white coat, it’s a white jacket.
And I have something on my neck.
It might look like a stethoscope, but it isn’t.
See? Here’s an earphone jack, and it’s actually… it’s an earphone. It’s a headphone.
I’m not into cosplay but… anyway, that’s me.

And what I do basically is I teach English to people.
Basically to grown-ups.
But also to children in junior high school or above.

And the reason why I call myself the “English Doctor” is because my approach in teaching English is a little bit different from others in that… I call that everybody’s problem the “English learning disorders” because these become obstacles to learning the language. And I try to remove the obstacles that creates English learning disorders. It’s a unique approach.

I give lectures to companies, too… I have seminars for people… I create my own English textbooks and I sell them as well.
I do writing of the books as well.
I also write web articles and newspapers… I speak on radios…
Um… it’s a community FM station and I also speak in “Rainbow Town FM radio” which is in Koto-ward, Tokyo since 2014. So, that’s a long time that I’ve had this program.

And I’ll talk a little bit about my writing career.
For example, on the Japan Times Alpha, which is an English newspaper for English learners.
It’s a weekly newspaper in English.
And I write a column every week, and I’ve been doing this for like three or four years now… yes.
So I write columns and I have about 10 books published, 10 in paper physical books.
A total of 160,000 copies so far.
Yep, so I am a writer as well.

And today this press conference is about, first of all the crisis of seeing the inventory of my books being scrapped――what happened from there.
And the issue of this inventory scrapping of books and… and magazines in the publishing industry.
And also it’s related to some social issues as well.
Then I did this emergency crowdfunding.
And there was a miracle that happened after that.

I’d also like to talk about why I think that what I did this time has social meaning, social significance.
And at the end I have saved some time for Q & A as well.
I mean I’ve received some questions already beforehand.
And so I’ll try to answer those and also answer some of the questions I receive today.

So again, this press conference is delivered in a form of YouTube live and so you can use the chat box.
You can type in your questions at any time.
Please feel free to ask anything you like and just type them in.
